NEW YORK - Overall consumer confidence got a substantial boost
for the second week in a row, bringing it back up to levels not
seen since mid-May, according to the latest ABC News/Money Magazine
poll.
The consumer comfort index rose four points to negative-11 in the
week ended June 27, up from negative-15 a week earlier, according
to the survey released Tuesday.
The index now stands at the level it was last at on May 16, before
it embarked on a series of declines.
The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus three percentage
points.
According to the survey, 40 percent of respondents expressed confidence
in the economy in the latest week, up from 36 percent the week before
and near a five-month high.
Also, 54 percent of those polled said their own finances were in
good standing, down slightly from 55 percent in the prior week.
In assessing the buying climate, 40 percent of respondents said
it was good, up from 37 percent a week earlier.
The consumer comfort index was based on a random survey of 1,000
respondents nationwide ended June 27. The index measures typical
Americans' confidence in three areas: the national economy, their
own finances, and their willingness to spend money, according to
the report.
