Washington, DC, Jul. 14 (UPI) -- House Budget Committee Chairman
Jim Nussle, R-Iowa, said Wednesday U.S. job figures for June are
consistent with a strong and growing economy.
"The June report is still consistent with a strong and growing
economy," Nussle said in a memo distributed to his Republican
colleagues. "We can expect another strong employment report
in July, and a possible upward revision of June's numbers."
The economy, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said, created
112,000 jobs during June, a figure some Bush critics have dismissed
as evidence of a slowdown in job creation.
"Monthly jobs growth so far this year has averaged 211,000
per month -- similar to the 200,000 average monthly gain for the
expansion of the 1990s," Nussle said, a time during which,
he added, there were, "many occurrences of one month of lower
jobs growth."
"Preliminary estimates of lower monthly jobs growth,"
Nussle said, "typically occurred every 3 to 4 months - even
during an overall trend of robust economic and jobs growth."
The preliminary figure of 112,000, Nussle said, "could reasonably
reach a final estimate of a 200,000 job gain for June," once
the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics issues its revised report in
August.
