Question: I am considering moving my banking to Bank of
America and noticed they have three award-travel debit cards
American West, Alaskan Airlines, and US Airways. I have not flown
any of the three airlines and two of them do not even fly into my
home airport (Nashville). Which of the programs, if any, would be
the best bet as far as earning miles and eventually using them?
I would really like to use rewards for travel to Hawaii, Mexico
or Europe.
Answer: An interesting question because you are basing your
credit card choice on award redemption possibilities. Most members
choose the card first and then ask this question well after it's
too late.
I've got to go with Alaska Airlines on this one. All of them in
a way could satisfy your requirements, but I believe the Alaska
Mileage Plan credit card contains the best benefits with annual
bonuses and upgrades included in the mix. They have an unusual number
of flights to Mexico (for an Alaskan carrier anyway). They have
a great and growing relationship with American Airlines and other
international carriers such as British Airways, Cathay Pacific and
KLM.
A rundown of the carriers you can use with Alaskan Airlines miles:
For Mexico you have Alaska, American, Northwest and the leader in
flights there Continental. For Hawaii you have Northwest,
Continental, American and Hawaiian Airlines. For Europe, the list
is even larger: KLM, Northwest, Continental, Cathay Pacific, British
Airways and American.
Alaskan offers plenty of award choices and a credit card I have
recommended before. Hope this helps.
